Our client was having a rear extension built to incorporate a new kitchen, dining area, and additional shower room. During early discussions, several concerns were identified, including the absence of a valid EICR, an outdated consumer unit, and an existing high-demand electric shower upstairs.

With the addition of a second shower room, careful consideration was required to ensure the electrical system would not become overloaded if two high-powered showers were operating simultaneously.

Due to the absence of a current EICR, we carried out a full test and inspection of the property before any new works commenced. This allowed us to assess the condition and capacity of the existing installation.

Taking into account the additional electrical demand from the extension and new shower room, we completed full design and load calculations to ensure the system would operate safely and efficiently. To properly distribute the load, a dedicated shower priority consumer unit was installed, along with a brand-new main consumer unit to replace the outdated board.

We also managed the application process and assisted the client with arranging a DNO fuse upgrade, ensuring the property had sufficient incoming supply capacity and was effectively future-proofed.

We worked closely alongside the client and other trades throughout the build, attending site as required and completing both first and second fix installations in line with the construction schedule.

The final result provided the client with a safe, modern, and future-ready electrical system capable of supporting the new extension and allowing for potential upgrades such as a heat pump installation in the future.
